Congratulations to PVEA member Tricia Miller - PENNSYLVANIA TEACHER OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!! - Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Congratulations to Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year, Tricia Miller! Mrs. Miller was named PA Teacher of the Year in Hershey on Monday evening, December 5. Also, special mention goes out to Penns Valley's other two semi-finalists, Jacqui Wagner and Mary Conner-Righter.
Congratulations to our PVEA National Certified Teachers - Tuesday, January 24, 2012
In December, our membership had three of its teachers achieve National Board Certification, joining the only other National Board Certified Teacher in the district, Heather Michael, and bringing Penns Valley's percentage of National Board Certified teachers to almost 4 percent, five time higher than the state percentage.

While the Department of Education sets basic teaching certifications requirements, National Board Certification is a voluntary, rigorous, and multi-year assessment program which requires teachers to demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills, and practices. As part of the process, the teachers must build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a self-reflective analysis of their classroom teaching. Additionally, teachers must pass an assessment on their knowledge of the subjects they teach. The process is so rigorous that the first-year achievement rate is only about 40 percent while only about 65 percent of candidates ever reach National Board Certification. According to the National Research Council, the process of National Board Certification has a positive impact on student achievement, teacher retention and professional development.

In addition to the three educators, Penns Valley Area has five other educators in the National Board Certification process.

Congratulations to Kristen Albright, an elementary librarian who has been teaching for 16 years. She received her National Board certification in Library Media: Early Childhood through Young Adulthood. Additionally, Albright is planning to take a class which will allow her to help other educators work through the National Board Certification process.

Congratulations to Jill Geesey, a Language Arts teacher with 25 years of teaching experience, who received National Board Certification in the area of English Language Arts: Adolescence and Youn
